Dr. Appelt is a professor of Neuroscience in the department of Bio-Medical Sciences at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). Dr. Appelt serves as the director for Basic and Clinical Neuroscience course in the DO curriculum, the director of the Neuroscience course in the Biomedical master program and the director of PCOM’s Biological Imaging facility. She was instrumental in developing the dual degree DO/PhD. program in Cellular and Molecular Biology designed to develop physician-scientist and is currently the director of the program. Dr. Appelt has also been instrumental in developing Neurosurgery workshops at PCOM designed to train residents and student doctors in the latest neurosurgical technics. As an advocated for student health wellness, she facilitated a student-run program that focuses on decreasing the stigma of mental illness among medical students In addition to her PCOM commitments, she serves as a consultant for Genesphire, a biotechnology company specializing in DNA based nanotechnology and a consultant for the Franklin Institutes brain exhibit. Dr. Appelt received her PhD from the Medical College of Pennsylvania and postdoctoral training from Hahnemann University, both in Philadelphia. Dr. Appelt has done extensive research in the field of aging and is recognized for her work on Alzheimer’s disease. She is investigating pathogen involvement as a trigger for developing Alzheimer’s disease.
